Service Opportunities this week 12/20

Take advantage of your time off to help others... and earn service credits if you still need them.

The Lunch Kitchen needs extra volunteers this week!  Please come join in the fun!  There are many great ways to help out:

Thursday morning from 7:00am to 9:00am, we will be passing out breakfast in the front parking lot to anyone driving by who wants to stop.  We need volunteers to help hand out the meals and spread a little cheer that morning.  The breakfast box will include a pamphlet with information about the Lunch Kitchen, the Mustard Seed Clinic and also our Candlelight Service.

Friday will be our BIG GIVE day!  We will be having festivities all day in the small auditorium for the families that come to the Kitchen.  Many do not have anyone else this Christmas, so we want to make this day special.  If you or your family can donate an hour or two of your time just to come and be a friend, it would be great!  The schedule will be as follows:

11:30am to 1:00pm :  Christmas Lunch
1:00pm - 2:00pm:  Holiday Bingo!
2:00pm - 4:00pm:  How the Grinch Stole Christmas movie
4:00pm - 5:00pm:  Big Give Basket and Toy Giveaway
5:00pm - 6:00pm:  Soup Dinner
6:00pm - 6:45pm:  Everyone invited to attend Candlelight Service

If you can donate a casserole dish of Dressing for the Christmas Lunch, or a few dozen sugar cookies for the kids to decorate, please let Holly Schreiber know.  Her email address is hollymmoore@gmail.com.  We hope to see you!

Pictures from the Red River Rake

Make sure you check out the pictures from the Red River Rake!  We raked four yards this year and had a blast doing it.  Give these students a pat on the back and a word of encouragement next time you see them!  I'm thankful for their hearts of service!

Form for submitting Questions online

Some of you asked for an online form to submit questions so here it is.  We will begin answering questions next week.

We will take 1 or more Wednesday nights to answer your questions. There will be a panel of people that will be answering questions to the best of their knowledge. I will not guarantee that every question will be answered but do not let that keep you from asking! Don't ever be afraid to ask questions.

Remember, these questions are about church, theology, God, beliefs, doctrine, religions, Jesus, the Bible, communion, worship, etc. Make sure you put your name if you want us to know who asked or if you think we might need more clarification. That way we can contact you. You can ask up to three questions on this form. If three is not enough, submit your first three and then click on the link again.

Please be as clear and specific as your question allows.

Names of God and speaking schedule

Sunday mornings we have been studying the Names of God.  When you know someone well you know their name and you know their nicknames.  Throughout the Bible and especially the Old Testament, God has many names.  The more we know and understand these names, the better we will know God.

We've spent three or four Sundays on this and now we're changing it up a little.  We're still learning about the names of God but we're going to be hearing from each other now!

Last Sunday, those present had an opportunity to select a name of God from a big list.  They could choose their favorite name, a cool name, or just close their eyes and pick one.  Then they signed up for a day to present.  There will about 5 students presenting every week through the beginning of December.

*Some people were not present when we chose names.  There will be another opportunity to choose names on the Sundays to follow.

This is the tentative schedule (with a week off while we're at the Fall Retreat):
November 7:
Payne F. - Adonai
Taja M. - El Emet
Rachel M. - El
Demetria R. - Yahweh Shalom
Dalton V.  - Elah Sh'maya

November 21:
Drew B. - Father
Brandon S. - I AM
Caleb B. - Elohay Kedem
Shelbi C. - Yahweh O'saynu

November 28:
Melissa G. - Yahweh Shalom
Caitlin G.  - El Shaddai
Hannah C. - Yahweh
Hannah B. - Qanna
Kylie R. - Immanu El

December 5:
Lawson S. - Elah Yisrael

Remember: If anyone needs some help don't hesitate to ask.  If you're having trouble finding where it's located in the Bible, I can tell you.

Corn Maze

We're going to the Corn Maze October 16th!  This year's theme is Vexcon, as you can tell from the picture.  I have no problem admitting that I like to watch Billy the Exterminator and therefore, I'm really excited about going to this maze.  And it's my first corn maze!

The cost for the maze is $20.  That includes the Corn Maze plus a lot of extras!  We'll be going in the evening.  We'll meet at the church at 6PM on that Saturday and carpool over there.  We're going early enough so that you have an opportunity to do both mazes.  There is a normal maze, that's the one above, and a haunted maze!  They also have haunted trails.  The haunted maze starts at dark.

Bring money for concessions if you want to eat while you're there or get any snacks.  According to the website, outside food and drink is not allowed.  You may just want to grab dinner before you come.

We'll head back to church once everyone has had their fill of fun or frights!  Parents, if you can help carpool let me know!  Thanks!

Parent & Volunteer Meeting Recap

Thank you so much for being a part of our meeting!  I hope that everyone filled out a Parent Information sheet.  If you did not, please pick one up from me.  I hope you also took a copy of the Airline Student Ministry Orientation packet.  These are available in the magazine holder outside my office.  They contain important information for Parents, Volunteers, and Youth--this includes a year long calendar of major events with projected costs.  I will post the calendar and projected costs on the website also.

I won't apologize for the brevity of the meeting but I do want to keep the lines of communication open!  If you have any questions, thoughts, or ideas don't hesitate to contact me.  I want to know!

I will apologize for not thanking Nikki for preparing our meal on Sunday.  She did a wonderful job!  She also puts in as much work as me helping youth grow in their understanding and relationship with Christ.  We are a team and we are here to support you and encourage you!  And thanks to our deacons for helping clean up!

Update on Mission:Here ("Lunch on the Street")

As you know, this is our last scheduled week to go downtown and eat lunch with our new friends.  I don't know about all of you but I'm not going to stop being a part of their lives after this week.  I may not be able to see them as regularly but I'm still going to make an effort.  I already know I'm going to miss those friendships and conversations and I don't want that.

For those that are interested, we can plan some weekend trips downtown to hang out and eat lunch.  Obviously, we can't do Thursdays while school is in session so Saturdays will work best.

With that said, I want to make everyone aware of the situation surrounding "Lunch on the Street" at this time.  From Cassie Hammett (Lunch on the Street coordinator and ministry leader at "The Hub"):

Lunch on the Street has been cancelled this week, and we would like for you to pray about this event with us. This week we received a call from the Shreveport Police and were told that we could no longer do Lunch on the Street in front of the courthouse. There have been complaints from down town workers about the group eating out on the sidewalk. We are in prayer about where to move the event and how to handle as we go forward. We ask that you lift up this event with us and ask that God opens doors!
Satan sure knows how to drive a wedge!  It's amazing how people can complain when you're doing something good for the community!  I ask that you guys pray as well.  I'm not sure how we cannot be allowed to meet on the sidewalk and simply eat lunch.  Pray that there is an alternative though and it's found soon!  Pray for those who complain.  Pray for those whom we won't get to meet with.  Pray for the law enforcement officials who are trying to do their job.

With great reluctance, I have to cancel Mission:Here for this Thursday.  I cannot take anyone with me when I know we've been asked not to gather.  (I won't say that I'm not going.)

Mission:Here

Mission:Here is all about us being aware of what's going on around us and how we respond.  Thursdays in July, starting the 8th, we'll meet together at the church to make PB&J sandwiches.  We'll make two sandwiches for every person.  Then we'll go to downtown Shreveport by the courthouse on Texas Street.  We'll meetup there with other people who have also brought two lunches.  We'll be taking these sandwiches to people that are hungry.  Having two sandwiches, we'll not only feed somebody, but we'll be able to eat with them.  We'll be able to build relationships and share stories.  This is an exciting opportunity to go beyond what we're used to.

If you can bring peanut butter, jelly, bread, or all three to help out that would be great!  You may already have some of this stuff lying around.  If you don't eat PB&J, that's okay.  Bring what you do eat and bring an extra of that to share.  That way people don't think we're too good to eat the stuff we're giving them because we're not.

Canoe and Camping Trip

The Canoe Trip will take place July 9-11.

We'll leave Friday morning at 6AM and return Sunday at 6PM.  These times are subject to change.
This trip is a combination of canoeing and camping.  We will canoe for half a day on Friday, the whole day Saturday, and half a day Sunday.  Friday and Saturday nights we will camp in tents along the bank of the river.  Canoes will hold two people plus all of your belongings.  Do not overpack, your partner may not appreciate it.  Choose your partner wisely.

We are canoeing the Buffalo River in the area of St. Joe, AR.  Our canoes will be rented from Buffalo River Outfitters.  The cost will be $50, plus your supplies and food.  Also, we will have lunch (Friday) before we get on the river and lunch (Sunday) when we take out.

Supplies: (Find friends and relatives that already own this stuff and just borrow it!)
  1. Waterproof Bag (they're usually bright yellow. Wal-mart had them last time I checked)
  2. Shoes for the river (watershoes, tough sandals, old tennis shoes, etc.  Flip-flops will not work)
  3. Ice chest (It's a good idea to share with your partner)
  4. Tent (also good to share, as long as you're the same gender)
  5. Tarp (good to put under your tent and good for those tents that aren't completely waterproof)
  6. Sleeping bag (It will be hot, but you'll want something to cover up with at times)
  7. Swimsuit (1 or 2, personal preference.  Make sure it's modest)
  8. Clothes to sleep, chill in.  (For when we're not on the river.)
  9. Garbage Bag (for trash)
  10. Eating Utensils
  11. Plate (I've used a frisbee in the past.  It's light and doubles as... a frisbee)
  12. Sunscreen
  13. Shade Hat
  14. Chair (Nice to have when sitting around the fire and such)
  15. Towel(s)
  16. Bug Spray
  17. Flashlight

Toiletries:
  1. Toothbrush and paste (We won't neglect our hygiene just because we're roughing it)
  2. Deodorant
  3. Soap and shampoo
  4. Some people have said they're going to bring baby-wipes to clean with.  If you can handle that, go for it.  I can't.
  5. Toilet paper
  6. Perfume Attracts bugs!

Food: Completely up to you.  Some ideas...
  1. Pop-tarts (Great for morning)
  2. Beef jerky (Snack)
  3. I grill a couple of hamburgers (2 dinners), freeze them in foil, pack them in my ice chest and then heat them over the fire.  I usually bring buns and ketchup.
  4. Saltine crackers.
  5. Powerade & Water.  I avoid soft drinks and so should you.
  6. Boiled peanuts in a can. These work great when we stop for lunch.
  7. I've taken vienna sausage before, sardineschicken of the sea (it's in a bag--I don't really remember the name, I just know I get chicken, not tuna).  These are all great and go well with crackers.
  8. Peanut butter & Jelly + Bread
There will be a fire at night, unless it rains a lot.  I will add to this list if I need to so check back every-so-often.  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me or call me.  I'm really excited about this trip and I'm looking forward to making some great memories.

As always, you cannot go without filling out a Medical Release Form and turning it in to me.

How to receive updates straight to your phone

Parents and students,

Sometimes things happen spontaneously. Sometimes they're planned. Sometimes we forget either way. Here's a way to help that.

Anytime the blog is updated, a notification is sent through Twitter. Anytime something happens spontaneously, I send an update through Twitter. It's easy to view these tweets on Twitter or right here on the website.

Now it's even easier to stay in the loop! By simply texting "FOLLOW airlinestudents" to 40404 from your mobile phone, you will receive all of these updates directly to your phone. Pretty cool if you ask me. So go ahead and give it a try if you want!

You can also become a fan of Airline Student Ministry on Facebook by texting "fan airlinestudentministry" to 32665.

Hope this helps!

Uplift: Packing List, Rules, Dress code

UPDATE: Make sure you bring money for 2 lunches--one during the trip there, and one on the way back.

Before we get to the good stuff remember that if you violate any of these things, your parents and Pres. Obama will be called. Your parents or Obama will pick you up from camp and we will carry on without you.

While you're packing, there are some important things to remember.
1. Do not violate the dress code.
2. It will be hot.
3. It may rain.
4. There is free time everyday where you have the option to get hot and sweaty.
5. Bring clothes to get hot and sweaty in.
6. Bring DEODORANT and CLEAN UNDERWEAR.
7. You are required to shower daily.

Bring:
1. Bible, notebook, pen
2. Bedding (sleeping bag, pillow, sheets, blanket, etc.)
3. Towel and bathing suit
4. Personal hygiene articles (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, deodorant/anti-perspirant, etc.)
5. Clothing appropriate to dress code
Do Not Bring:

2. Roller blades, skateboards, water guns, water balloons, etc. These items can cause injury to you and others.
3. Tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia, and weapons of any kind. Any of these will result in your expulsion from camp.

::RULES

1. Uplift is a Christian camp and we ask that you be respectful of other campers, counselors, Harding students, employees, and property.
2. Uplift I.D. cards need to be worn at all times. Your I.D. card is your pass to events and meals.
3. Computers, laptops, televisions, radios, video games, and jewelry are not permitted at Uplift. These items can be easily lost or stolen.

5. Remain on campus. Being caught off campus without permission will result in immediate expulsion from the camp at parents’ expense.

::DRESS CODE

Modesty is important and, because of this, we have a few rules concerning our dress code:
1. Don’t bring clothing without sleeves (guys and girls). You will not be allowed to wear it under any circumstances, including recreation time. Inappropriate clothing for Uplift includes any sleeveless apparel, (for example, sundresses, tank tops, sleeveless blouses, athletic shirts, and cut-off T-shirts) and clothing that exposes any part of the mid-section when standing, sitting, or bending over. All tops should be long enough to be tucked in.
2. Shorts may be worn, but they must be modest length. At Uplift, we define “modest” as those shorts which are below the fingertips when standing straight, arms to the side. This length applies to athletic shorts as well.
3. Skin tight clothing (tops, spandex, tight jeans, etc.) halter tops, or otherwise revealing clothing are inappropriate for Uplift and are to be left at home. Young ladies are asked not to bring any low-cut shirts/tops.

Senior Sunday and Celebration

It's that time of year again...

School is quickly coming to an end.  Summer is quickly approaching.  Seniors are about to graduate and go off to college!

Hopefully it's not news to anyone that Senior Sunday is May 2nd.  There will be a special time set aside during the morning worship to honor the seniors.  We'll get a glimpse into their life through a picture slideshow as well.

That night, from 5-7PM in the small auditorium, is when we'll celebrate with them.  We'll chow down on food catered by Don Juanz.  We'll have a video presentation to cover anything we might have missed.  And we'll have an open mic time for sharing stories, saying goodbye, or just saying we'll miss them!

Hope that all of you can make it!

Seniors and Parents of Seniors, I need pictures

*UPDATE: 15 to 20 pictures

Senior Sunday this year will take place on May 2nd.  We'll honor the Seniors that morning and then celebrate with them that night.
...
This means I need pictures!  We will have a slideshow for them that morning.  This slideshow will chronicle their life in (yep, you guessed it...) pictures--from birth (well, maybe just after) to senior year--so collect your favorite pictures.  If they're already digital, that's awesome!  If not, we'll scan them.

There will also be an information sheet to fill out about each senior student.  I'll get that to students/parents as soon as I can.

Please try to get your pictures to me as soon as possible to allow plenty of time to work on the slideshow.
Thanks!!

*The location for the celebration that night is TBD.  If you want to host it or have an idea about where to have it, let me know!

(Yes, that is me my senior year of high school.)
